CRASH SCENE: Police close the road to Bowness at Newby Bridge following a fatal accident at Counties Meet MILTON HAWORTH REF: 0522382

Mary Elizabeth Devine, of Church Walk, Ulverston, died in the collision on the A592 on Saturday. The accident happened just after 9.30am on the A592 between Bowness and Newby Bridge, just north of Blake Holme.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

She was driving a blue, Suzuki Wagon R, which was involved in a collision with a yellow Mini.

Police said the cars were travelling in opposite directions. The two occupants of the Mini are from Bowness.

They were taken to Royal Lancaster Infirmary on Saturday to be treated for serious injuries. Police said the A592 was closed for a significant amount of time.

It had been frosty overnight.

Julita Mankowska, duty manager at the Beech Hill Hotel on the A592, said: “The road was closed from at least 10am to 4pm.

“From time to time we do get accidents on this road because the Newby Bridge road is extremely narrow at some points, and bendy.”

Crews from Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene after receiving an emergency call at 9.34am.

They released a casualty from one of the vehicles using cutting equipment and various other appliances.

One fire engine from Windermere, one from Ulverston and one from Kendal attended the accident.

A major rescue vehicle from Kendal Fire Station also attended. They did not return to base until around 1.30pm.

Ian Smith, coroner for south and east Cumbria, has been informed of the death.
