Soulbys Ulverston Advertiser

The first newspaper to appear in the market town of Ulverston was published by Stepehn Soulby in 1847. It appeared each Thursday (market day) from his premises in King Street.
Its original wordy title was "Soulbys Ulverton Advertiser and General Intelligencer". Not only did it record the essential births, deaths and marriages of the period, but it included reports on sports, shows, shipping news and tragic events which occurred all too frequently at local iron ore mines and quarries.
The newspaper, originally priced at one penny, eventually faded in popularity and was absorbed by the North Western Daily Mail and the Ulverston News (forerunners of today's North West Evening Mail) in the early 1900s.
To local historians today, Soulby's Ulverston Advertiser is an essential source from which to glean the life and times of Victorian Ulverston.
