Should parking prices in Ulverston be increased?

PLANS to put up parking prices may not go ahead after all.

South Lakeland District Council’s cabinet had decided to increase the cost of parking on the authority’s car parks for any length of time, and to begin charging from 8am instead of 9am, from April.

But opposition group members – Councillors Colin Hodgson, David Williams and Roger Bingham – were unhappy with the planned price rises.

They ‘called in’ the decision, which meant it went before SLDC’s overview and scrutiny committee.

The committee decided the issue should be debated by SLDC’s full council, which is made up of 51 councillors from across the district. Cllr Hodgson told the Evening Mail: “We made a strong case against the high increase in Ulverston and other Lakes places, especially Kirkby Lonsdale, to the committee and it’s been referred back to full council.

“It doesn’t mean to say we have won but at least we have got a stay of execution.

“Now it will be debated by 51 councillors at the end of February, and not just a cabinet decision. We have another chance.”

Parking charges in Ulverston are significantly lower than other places in the district.

But the cabinet had decided to make them generally the same as other car parks outside of the central Lakes, such as those in Grange and Kendal.

The central Lakes car parks in Windermere, Bowness, Ambleside and Grasmere were already more expensive, but would also see a rise.

SLDC’s cabinet said the increases were part of a coordinated, modern approach to bring car park charges in line with other authorities and provide motorists with consistent parking costs as they drive around Cumbria.

Standardised tariffs and operating hours with other authorities, such as the Lake District National Park Authority, are also part of that vision.

Have your say

"Should parking prices in Ulverston be increased?"
Yes; treble it so that local businesses go bust.
As far as 'Parking charges in Ulverston are significantly lower than other places in the district' is concerned; I should hope they are. Parking in Bowness is basically a 'tourist tax' and is tantamount to extortion.
