Drummin' Men
Though the AGM of the Ulverston Jazz Appreciation Society occupied members at their August 26 gathering at Bardsea‘s Malt Kiln Village Hall, the music certainly wasn’t forgotten. A tribute on records to three fine British drummers who died recently - Martin Drew, Jack Parnell and Allan Ganley - was followed by another kind of tribute: to the Smiths, the scores of jazz musicians who have inhabited that name.
The programme for September 23 will include:
Out of the Woods: Alto saxophonist Phil Woods is one of the leading heirs to Charlie Parker - and remarkably is still playing.
Odd corners of Jazz: Inevitably, the jazz world is the home of many eccentricities and byways; some are explored here
Blues Sophistication: The big band blues of Onzy Mathews combining the elegance of Ellington with the bounce and bite of Basie.
The Society meets every month at the Malt Kiln, a few minutes’ drive from Ulverston, where it presents a wide mix of jazz recordings, with expert commentary, on high quality audio equipment. Sessions start at 7pm, and the modest charge of £2 includes refreshments. Potential members, whether new to jazz or battle-hardened veterans, will find a friendly welcome - but for more information phone Roy Booth at 01524 853335, or visit the club’s website at http://S2.webstarts.com/ulverstonjazz
