Chart star to play at Ulverston pub

AN Ulverston landlord is looking forward to welcoming one of his musical idols to his pub for a live show.

Neil Southworth, who runs The Old Farmhouse with his partner Mandy Boyle, put his pub forward as a venue for Beautiful South singer Paul Heaton’s upcoming tour – but he never expected anything to come of it.

Mr Southworth said: “We got in touch with Paul when we spotted the story in one of the trade magazines.

“I sent off an email, but never really thought I’d hear anything back.

“He was asking for traditional pubs to come forward, and we’re absolutely massive Paul Heaton fans.

“I’ve been to see him loads of times but never in a venue as intimate as this, it’s going to be fantastic.”

Mr Heaton, who made his name with 80s indie band The Housemartins, is celebrating turning 50 this year by setting off on a 2,500-mile cycling tour of the UK, playing live shows in pubs along the way.

The qualified landlord has recently purchased his own pub, The Kings Arms in Salford, and starts the tour there before cycling to Ulverston for the second date on May 16.

It is all part of a campaign to save struggling pubs from closure.

Mr Southworth said: “Paul used to think he was an alcoholic but he realised he was just addicted to pubs.

“We’ve seen quite a few local pubs close, and once they’re gone they never come back.

“The first venue on the tour will be his own pub, the Kings Arms in Salford, then he will be cycling up here for the second show.

“We have had a lot of live music here in the past, but it isn’t always financially viable.

“The money raised goes towards the campaign and we get our expenses back, but I’m not bothered if we make a profit, a loss or break even, because this is all about creating a feelgood factor.

“Not many pubs have had someone like Paul Heaton play live there.”

l Tickets for the show cost £15 and a limited number are available from The Old Farmhouse.

Have your say
